WELCOME TO EAGLE NEST
MIDDLE SCHOOL
The students, teachers and staff of Eagle Nest Middle
School all work together to achieve our goal - a better education and a better
life for you. We feel that Eagle Nest
Middle school is a fine school in every way and we hope that you will help us
keep it that way. Look upon your
classmates and teachers with kindness and respect. Work hard, participate in activities and clubs and lend your
support to the endeavors of others.
Welcome - WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE. We are glad
you are a student at Eagle Nest Middle School and we want you at school every
day that you can possibly be here.
ACADEMICS
Requirements
All students, fifth through eighth grades, will
receive instruction in courses required by the State of New Mexico - Language
Arts, Social Studies/History, Science, Math and Physical Education. Bilingual Education, Health and various
exploratory courses to include Music, Art, Life Skills, Communication, Computer
Applications, and Library will be offered.
Additional courses prescribed by the Cimarron Board of Education may be
added at any time.
GRADES AND REPORT CARDS
Grading periods are nine weeks in length. Grades are reported four times a year and
report cards will be issued following the end of each nine week grading
period. Failing notices are sent at the
end of the fifth week in each nine week period. Your final semester grade for each semester will be made up as
follows: 2/5 will consist of the grades earned in each of the nine-week periods
and 1/5 will be based on the semester test.
Number grades will be recorded on all subjects other than
exploratory/encore courses. Grades in
exploratory/encore courses will be recorded as Satisfactory, Improvement
Needed, and Unsatisfactory. Students
reported as failing any core subject at the end of any nine week period will be
required to relinquish their exploratory time for study help during the
following nine weeks. Students may be
retained in the same grade for failure to complete the prescribed requirements
for that grade.
* In Eagle Nest School test grades count twice.
HOMEWORK
Homework is necessary to help students develop good
study habits, accept responsibility, and manage time. Homework will be assigned at all grade levels and is intended to
be completed during after-school hours.
Students should set aside a special time daily and use this time
wisely. Parents should create a home
environment that encourages student learning.
Superintendent's Honor Roll - maintain a numerical grade average of 90 in
all classes, with no grade below an 85.
Principal's Honor Roll - maintain a numerical grade average of 85 in
all classes, with no grade below 80.
(Honor roll grades must be consistent with the student’s grade level.)
NO
PASS? - NO PLAY! - NO LEAD!
Avoid surprises at report card time! Keep up with your
grades and make up necessary work. It is your responsibility to be informed and
to keep your parents informed. An
assignment book is the best way to keep track of your assignments.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
Eligibility requirements for athletics/activities
begin as students enter the seventh grade.
First quarter - all students entering seventh grade
are eligible.
Each subsequent quarter - Student must maintain an average
of 70, with no grade below a 60, in required courses to remain eligible,
however, eligibility may be
calculated on grades for the semester if the student fails one quarter subject. Averages will be reviewed at the end of 4
1/2 weeks into each quarter in order to advise students of possible problems
and offer help or to reinstate.
To serve as Student Council Representative or an
elected officer of a class or club requires an average of 70, with no grade
below a 60, in required courses. To be
elected and serve as a Student Council officer requires an average of 80, with
no grade below a 60. Nominations will
be screened by faculty. All students
who represent this school in a leadership role must follow school rules.
ABSENCES/TARDIES
AND MAKE-UP WORK
Should you be unable to attend school for a medical
reason or other emergency, parent(s) should contact the school office by 9:00
a.m. each day. The number is 377-6991.
Eagle Nest Middle School complies with the New Mexico Compulsory School
Law. Students who are absent more than
10 days, without proper excuse, must be reported to Human Services. That means we must do everything we can to
see that you attend school. Your school
attendance is important to us and to you.
Make-up work is a poor substitute for the verbal information and
explanation you will miss if you are not in class. Remember, no one can take your place, and school is not as much
fun when you are not here. If there is
a reason for personal business trips, the school should be notified at least
one school day IN ADVANCE, and arrangements for assignments be made with
individual teachers so that make-up work may be turned in on THE FIRST DAY BACK
TO SCHOOL. It will be YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY to get from your teachers all class work missed because of
illness or emergency, and it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to properly complete all
work and give it to your teacher on time.
For illness or emergency, you will be allowed time to turn in the
make-up work equal to the time you were absent. Unless this is a long term project and then it’ due on the
deadline date or the day you return.
You must bring a note from yuour parent stating the reason for your
absence. At that time the teacher will
give you the make-up work.
If you are tardy for a class without a note signed by
a teacher, you will have automatic lunch detention.
EXCUSED ABSENCES (up to 4 days per quarter) are
allowed for:
1. Illness of student, doctor or dentist appointment,
or death in the family.
2. Personal business or trips for which the school has
been notified IN
ADVANCE.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES are ANY absence above 4 days per
quarter, REGARDLESS of
reason (except extended illness).
EXTENDED ILLNESS means that if you are sick or injured
and under doctor's
care, you will be allowed to make up your missed class work PROVIDED the doctor sends a
note verifying his treatment.
YOU MAY NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE SEMESTER IF YOU
MISS MORE THAN EIGHT (8) DAYS, REGARDLESS OF REASON
(excluding extended illness). Parent and student could appeal to a committee
comprised of the principal
and two (2) teachers, with the decision of that committee being final.
TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF
Your years at Eagle Nest Middle School are a time to
learn more about yourself and your abilities and to try out new, more
appropriate behavior for young adulthood.
In each of your classes, rules will be posted. Classroom rules will be identical for all Middle School classes.
Your teachers will give you additional information regarding the general rules
of our school. At any time if you are in doubt, don't hesitate to ask a member
of the staff. YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS.
IF YOUR ACTIONS BREAK THE SCHOOL RULES, THEN YOU MUST ACCEPT THE
CONSEQUENCES.
TAKING CARE OF YOUR STUFF
Your parents should be made aware that your personal
property (books, musical instruments, calculators, etc.) is your responsibility
and is not covered by school district insurance in case of damage or
theft. Radios, tape players,
skateboards, video games, etc. should not be brought to school. If yours follows you here, it will spend the
day in the office.
Lockers with combination locks are provided for you to
store your books, school supplies, etc. for safe keeping. Never give out your combination to another
person. Visits to your locker may be
made before and after school and during lunch or with teacher's approval. Please remember that lockers and desks belong
to the school and are made available to you for your convenience. The school may search student lockers and
desks on a periodic basis to protect the health, safety, and welfare of all
students.
I LEFT IT IN MY LOCKER...OR MAYBE IT'S AT HOME
Students are expected to bring their "stuff"
to class every day. Notebooks, paper,
pencil, assignment book, textbooks and homework won't do you any good if
they're left in your locker or at home.
Leaving it at home or in your locker usually "won't fly" as an
excuse.
TAKING CARE OF OUR SCHOOL
We should take pride in our school and ask that you
help us keep the building, furniture, equipment, walls, and floors in good
condition, If you damage your school
you will get lots of undivided attention.
You mess it up - you pay for it! There can also be legal action and
suspension or expulsion.
"GIVE A HOOT!
DON'T POLLUTE!"
Littering the hallways, classrooms and school grounds
can be very upsetting. Students learn better in an attractive atmosphere; teachers teach better and probably give less
homework because they aren't grouchy); everyone enjoys being in a building that
looks cared for and loved. So, pack up
your trash and put it in the nearest trash can.
I'M GLAD YOU HAVE A HALL PASS
Your classroom teacher will provide you with a pass to
go to the office, nurse, library, and counselor at appropriate times.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SICK BAY
If you need to take medicine, it is best to take it at
home. If it is absolutely necessary to
take prescription medicine at school, then you are responsible for delivering
that medicine to the office and reporting at the proper time in order to take
it. The primary function of your school
nurse is to make sure you have had your shots, to administer emergency first
aid, and to call your parents if you feel sick. Any medicines not in original containers must be accompanied by a
note signed by a parent. This includes
throat lozenges or cough drop.
"DO I HAVE TO DRESS OUT?"
Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade students are expected
to dress out and participate, and fifth grade students are expected to
participate in PE every day unless excused by a parent note.
FREE ENTERPRISE?
Every now and then students may get involved in
selling items from their locker.
Students are NOT to sell any item at school except those that are school
sponsored and approved.
"I'M IN LOVE"
It is normal for students your age to have boyfriends
and girlfriends. It is also normal if
you don't. There are certain behaviors
that are "disgusting" at certain times and in certain places. Relating to each other in a positive manner
does not mean intimate hugging and kissing at Eagle Nest Middle School.
WHEELS
Because of the risk to your safety and the safety of
others, skateboards are not permitted at school. Bicycles may be brought to school if students are willing to
assume full responsibility. There is a
bicycle rack provided on the south side of the parking lot and students are
expected to secure their bicycles there.
Middle School students may not drive any motorized vehicle to school.
THE LIBRARY - A LEARNING CENTER
All students are welcome in the School's Library at
any time during regular class periods; however, passes are required. Middle School students will use the library
under the direction of or with the approval of your teacher. Students will be expected to exhibit quiet
behavior during library study times.
BOOKS (Library and Text)
Lose it, eat it, tear it up, or let the rhinoceros sit
on it -- You pay for it. Overdue
library books will cost you $.05 per day.
"HELP! WHERE'S THE COUNSELOR?"
The counselor works closely with your teachers and is
available at most times during the afternoon.
She will help you explore: (1)
getting along with others, (2) learning more about your abilities and
interests, (3) making choices and decisions, (4) exploring problems common in
the lives of Middle School age people.
You can see the counselor by either asking your teacher to send you to
the counselor's office with a pass or by asking the school secretary to place a
note from you (stating that you want to be seen, listened to, etc.) in the
counselor's mailbox.
"OH, NO, I LOST IT!"
If you find something, bring it to the office. If you lose something, come to the office to
look for it. PLEASE do not bring
valuable property or inappropriate amounts of money to school.
"MY FRIEND FROM OUT OF TOWN IS JUST
VISITING"
A student from another school will not be allowed to
visit Eagle Nest Middle School.
Unauthorized visitors, or students on suspension, will be considered to
be trespassing and appropriate action will be taken.
"NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO SERVICE"
Students of Eagle Nest Middle School are expected to
maintain standards of good taste in the way they dress for school. Shoes and covered midriffs and covered
shoulders are required. Students are
not to wear sheer clothing, short shorts, mini-skirts, tank tops, hats,
bandannas, sunglasses-even on head, extremely tight clothing (i.e spandex by
itself), PE clothes (except
in PE), or other clothing that might be considered
disruptive. No clothing with reference
to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, foul language, or gross pictures will be
permitted. Be beautiful and attractive.
* In Eagle Nest School - How short is short? Shorts and skirts must be to fingertips when
standing. What is disruptive dress?
1. No underwear may be visible.
2. Pants may sag (allow for design), however,
the waist line of the pants must
be on the waist line of the individual. If the pants are too large to hold on the waist, the student must
wear a belt that is tightened at
the waist line.
3.Chains
may not be attached to clothing.
4.Tattoos
must be covered.
5.No
lip clips or pierced jewelry other than earings.
DRUGS AND SUBSTANCES
Students possessing, using, or selling tobacco,
alcohol, mind altering substances, or illegal drug or related paraphernalia on
school property, on school busses, or at any school activity on or away from
the school campus are subject to:
Temporary suspension from school
Notification of law enforcement agencies
Conference with parents and principal before
re-admission to class
Expulsion if offenses continue
Trained drug dogs may periodically visit the campus.
ROCKY V, VI, VII
The way to solve problems and resolve conflicts is
through discussion, negotiation, and compromise. The principal, counselor, teachers, and peer helpers will help
students in these matters if you ask for help.
Fighting will not be permitted and students involved will be suspended
and have their parents pick them up.
Repeated offenses may lead to expulsion. Student
safety and well being are major concerns to us.
* Any slapping, kicking, wrestling or any form of
‘Horse Play’ will be considered fighting.
"TERMINATOR" DEVICES
No weapons of any type are allowed on school property,
on school buses, or at any school activity on or away from campus. This regulation includes guns, knives,
chains, caps, explosives, or the use of any other instrument or object as a
weapon. Offenders are subject to
suspension and possible expulsion from school.
GRAFFITI AND OTHER ACTS OF VANDALISM
You mess it up - you pay for it! There can also be legal action and
suspension or expulsion from school. It
all depends upon the seriousness of the offense.
THEFT
Students taking something that does not belong to
him/her, regardless of the intent to return, are subject to paying for stolen
item, possible legal action, and suspension or expulsion.
TRUANCY
Students cutting class or failing to follow proper
procedures for absences are subject to in-school suspension or suspension from
school. Juvenile authorities will be
notified.
INSUBORDINATION OR WILLFUL DISOBEDIENCE
Students who refuse to obey a school rule, regulation,
or order given by a staff member or school official will be suspended. Expulsion is possible if offenses continue.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Each of us has a right to self respect and respect
from others. Sexual language, teasing,
gestures, or other physical or verbal actions which constitute sexual
harassment of either sex is strictly prohibited.
VERBAL ABUSE AND/OR PHYSICAL ASSAULT ON STAFF
Profanity, threats, obscene gestures or physical
assault are not appropriate at any time, but when directed toward any staff
member, immediate suspension and possible expulsion will result.
BOUNDARIES AND LIMITS
Eagle Nest Middle School is a closed campus. If you leave school for any reason, (i.e.
lunch, doctor's appointment) your parents must check you out through the
office. This is a Cimarron Municipal
School Board policy. An out of building
pass must be issued by the school office.
Students ARE required to stay in areas designated by staff members.
LET'S EAT
Food and drink are permitted in the cafeteria.
Students may keep their sack lunches in their hall lockers, but no other food
should be in the building.
You may only eat or drink in the classrooms with your
teacher’s permission.
Due to the potentially disruptive and harmful effects of laser beams, all types of laser producing mechanisms (e.g. laser pointers) are prohibited on campus.
Students guilty of cheating on an assignment or exam will receive a ‘0’ grade for that particular assignment or exam as well as be subject to disciplinary action. (Cheating meaning-giving or taking answers.)
IN-
SCHOOL SUSPENSION
If you are causing a minor disruption in the
classroom, you may be placed in "In-school suspension". This means suspension from classes but
remaining at school and doing your work in a designated area.
SUSPENSION (You lose!)
In the event that you are suspended from school, your
parents will be notified that you will be remaining with them out of school for
one day to one year, depending upon the seriousness of the offense.
EXPULSION (We all lose!)
This means that you have made very serious
inappropriate choices much too often.
You will be out of our school permanently and, by law, your parents will
be required to find another school for you to attend.
HAPPIER THOUGHTS
Of course, we don't think that you are going to have
any of these serious problems.
Suspension or expulsion are seldom applied. With all of us working together, your Middle School experience
can be one of the highlights of your life.
