WELCOME TO EAGLE NEST ELEMENTARY
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the start of a successful year and share a few important thoughts with you. I encourage the teachers at Eagle Nest School to be honest with parents at all times - from grades to social behavior. This may lead to unwelcome news at times, however, as principal I feel it is better for parents to find out now instead of later. I don't want the parents of this school to say, "Why didn't anyone tell me!".
Grades are another interesting topic. This school believes in high expectations. Once the student masters an objective a new one is presented. The same topic is not taught over and over - this just leads to grade inflation which is being dishonest to the parents. Our job is to present as much information to your son or daughter as possible, not teach review. This could lead to a lowering of a grade average, but it most definitely leads to an expansion of knowledge.
The educational process is only as good as the student, teacher, and parents' desire - together any dream can be caught. If one of these three areas are weak the path to success will be a rocky one. Lets work together to make this the best year possible. Feel free to contact the school if you have any concerns.
EAGLE NEST SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of this school is to provide a school that exists for the child. No action should be taken or decision made which would in any situation violate this basic principle.
In order to implement the above mentioned basic principle, the staff is committed to the following objectives:
1. Constant efforts should be made to meet the needs of individual children.
2. The acceptance of each child as a human being regardless of his
race, creed, religion, or economic standing.
3. The creation of a school environment that is structured to help the child learn respect for self and all members of society.
4. Teachers should make every effort to develop a caring attitude toward: students, parents, and colleagues.
May we, as teachers, conduct our personal lives and instruct and guide the children with whom we are privileged to work in such a way that one can easily interpret the philosophy of the faculty.
"for, in the quality of the teacher, in the last analysis, all depends."
(James B. Conant)
SCHOOL HOURS
Student hours at school are 8:20 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. Students are not allowed on the playground in the mornings as there is no supervision before school. Students may enter the building at 7:50 and report directly to the cafeteria.
STUDENT DISMISSAL
Children riding in car pools will be released first. Bus students will be dismissed second. Walkers will be dismissed after all busses and vehicles have cleared the school grounds. Please, Please, Please, parents picking children up in cars be cautious and careful, do not double park, do not wave your children on across the parking lot, be patient, wait in single file, move up in line as space permits. The children will be told to walk south on the sidewalk and around the outside of the parking lot to your car. Please follow the above - an injured child is too great a price to pay in order to save you five minutes.
LUNCH AND BREAKFAST
School lunch price is $1.75 per day. You may buy as many days as you like.
For example 4 days for $7.00, 8 days $14.00 etc. Breakfast will be served from 8:20 - 8:35 a.m. in the classrooms, breakfast is free. Milk may be purchased for $.30. Application for free or reduced-price lunch are available in the elementary office. Students may be released to go home for lunch if given written permission to the child's teacher; however elementary students are encouraged to eat in the school cafeteria, eating either the school lunch or their own sack lunch.
ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK
Should your child be unable to attend school for a medical reason or other emergency, parent(s) should contact the school office by 9:00 a.m.each day. The number is 377-6991. Eagle Nest Elementary complies with the New Mexico Compulsory School Law. Students who are absent more than 10 days a semester, without proper excuse, must be reported to Human Services. That means we must do everything we can to see that your child attends school. Your school attendance is important to us and to you. Make-up work is a poor substitute for the verbal information and explanation your child will miss if absent. Remember, no one can take your child's place, and school is not as much fun when he/she is absent. If there is a reason for personal business trips, the school should be notified in ADVANCE, and arrangements for assignments be made with the teacher so that make-up work may be turned in on THE FIRST DAY BACK TO SCHOOL. It is your responsibility to properly complete all work and give it to your teacher on time. For illness, or emergency, you will be allowed time to turn in the make-up work equal to the time you were absent. At the end of the school year awards are presented to those with perfect and regular (missing 1 day or less) attendance. Please encourage your child to work for one of these awards.
TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIAL
No fees are charged for the use of textbooks or library materials; however students will be charged replacement value for lost or damaged texts and library materials. A fine of $.05 per day will be charged for over due library books.
HOMEWORK
Research does prove that homework makes a difference in student achievement. Homework may be assigned to students as either (1) Work not completed in class or (2) as research and independent study. Homework assignments may be classified into one of four types which are listed below:
Practice - Practice is the most common and simple type of assignment given to help students master specific skills. These exercises should be limited to materials presented in class.
Preparation - Preparation assignments are given to prepare students to gain maximum benefit from subsequent lessons.
Extension - Extension assignments are given to determine if students can transfer a new skill or concept to a new situation.
Creative - Creative assignments require students to integrate many skills and concepts in the process of producing a response.
In an effort to implement the partnership responsibility for educating children, guidelines for homework are listed below.
1. Assign reasonable amounts of homework within the ability range of the students.
2. Assignments should relate to the present curriculum.
3. Assignments should be relevant.
4. The assignments should be clearly and thoroughly described.
5. All assignments should be graded or evaluated in some manner.
6. Parents should be kept informed of students progress.
Amount of homework: This is an approximate time for the average student. It does not include "special classes" such as (Bilingual, Art, Music, PE, or projects.
Kindergarten - 15 minutes Third Grade - 45 minutes
First Grade - 30 minutes Fourth Grade - 50 minutes
Second Grade - 30 minutes
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
1. Use class time wisely.
2. Complete all unfinished assignments at home.
3. Assume full responsibility for completing assigned homework.
4. Return all homework on time.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITY

GRADE CARDS - PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Grade cards will be issued in October, January, March, and May.
Parent teacher conferences are scheduled at the end of the first and third grading period, a Monday in October, and a Monday in March. If you are unable to attend the scheduled conferences, please notify the teacher so that time may be scheduled for another. Parents are encouraged to contact the school any time they have questions about their child's academic or social progress. Conferences with classroom teacher must be scheduled with the classroom teacher or through the principal's office by telephone or letter. A prearranged conference during a teacher's planning period before or after school will prevent the interruption of class time for all students. Please do not interrupt individual classrooms. This interferes with valuable learning for all students in the classrooms. The student's grades will be shown in percentages on the report card. Any grade below 60 is considered failing.
The teacher will notify parents during the fifth week of each grading period if there is a failing grade for a particular student in any academic area. There are two honor rolls for fourth graders. One, the Principal's Honor Roll will be for students who have an average of 90 or above with no grade below 76 in academic subjects at the end of each grading period. The second will be the Teacher's Honor Roll. Students will need an average of 86 or higher with no grade below 75 in academic subjects at the end of each grading period. Students on both honor rolls must have satisfactory grades in activity classes, social attitude, and work study habits during that grading period.
STUDENT RESOURCES
Special resources are available to assist children who have learning or social problems. If you are concerned about your child's academic or social progress and feel that extra help is needed, contact your child's teacher or the principal.
STUDENT DISCIPLINE
Students are expected to show respect and courtesy toward their teachers and fellow students in the classroom, cafeteria, on the playground and at all school activities. "Safety First" for themselves and for others applies on the playground, in physical education classes, and in all other situations where students safety is a concern.
Our goal at Eagle Nest School is to create an atmosphere where positive disciplinary measures will assist students to grow increasingly in self discipline. We will stress the worth of respect for every individual. Four rules are based on this premise. They center around safety and courtesy.
1. I will be careful of the safety of myself and others in the classroom, on the playground, and on the bus.
2. I will show respect for others through my language and behavior. (verbal and physical abuse is prohibited)
3. I will show respect for my environment. (vandalism will not be tolerated)
4. I will not let my behavior disrupt the learning of others.
Small disciplinary offenses are handled in the classroom: repeated or more serious offenses are referred to the principal's office and parents are contacted. Some causes for disciplinary action and/or suspension from school may include: (1) willful and gross misconduct: (2) continued disobedience: (3) use of illegal drugs on school premises: (4)misconduct on school busses or while on school sponsored trips; (5) leaving school without permission or playing hooky. It is contrary to school policy for students to possess weapons of any type on school grounds, including knives, chains, guns, etc.
Since the school has the authority over students from the time they leave home to go to school until they return home from school, students shall be disciplined and may be suspended for misconduct while in route to and from school. Parents or guardians will be held responsible for any damage done by student to school property.
BALL-GAMES
Elementary students who attend high school or mid school athletic events unaccompanied by their parents or those who do not sit with their parents at the games are to sit in the pep section of the gym. Teachers are assigned to this section to supervise elementary children. Children are to remain seated during the ball-game, visiting concession stand and bath room at quarter and half time breaks.
APPROPRIATE DRESS
Students of Eagle Nest School are expected to maintain standards of good taste in the way they dress for school. Shoes and covered midriffs are required. Students are not to wear sheer clothing, short shorts, tank tops, hats, bandannas, sunglasses, or other clothing that might be considered disruptive. No clothing with references to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, foul language, or gross pictures will be permitted.
TELEPHONES
School office telephones are for SCHOOL USE ONLY; Children will be called to the phone only for emergencies. Please plan your afternoon arrangements before your child leaves for school.
VALUABLES
Children should not have valuables or excessive money with them at school.

APPENDIX A
Dear Parent:
So that the staff of Cimarron Municipal Schools can:
a. Provide the most appropriate program for your son/daughter
b. be aware of his/her needs and interests
c. assist him/her in later job placement, and or
d. assist in gaining entrance to other programs or schools
records are maintained at school which include information about your son/daughter and his/her health and regular school program. Confidential records are kept in our Special Ed. Office under the supervision of PRINCIPAL/SPECIAL ED. DIRECTOR, and are available only to the teacher and staff working with the student. If your son/daughter should transfer to another school, these records are not released to most agencies or persons without written parent consent.
During the school year your child's school may prepare a yearbook which identifies school club members, honor students, members of our sports teams and interesting highlights of the year. At times, our central office or other school-affiliated groups may prepare publications or newspaper releases which use "directory information" about our students. Directory information in our district includes the name of the student, date and place of birth, major areas of study, awards received, participation in activities and sports, height and weight of members of athletics teams, dates of attendance and previous school of attendance. According to federal law, this directory information identified above may be publicly released without permission of parents. However if you do not wish to have this information released about your son/daughter you may so request by signing the form at the bottom of the following page, tearing on the dotted lines and sending it to your child's principal, within 15 school days. If this notification is not received, we will assume that your permission is given to use your son/daughter's directory information as described above.
You, as a parent, (or your son/daughter, if 18 or over) have the right to review all of your son's/daughter's regular records at any time and should contact the School Administration for an appointment. School personnel will be available to review the content with you. Copies may be requested for the cost of copying. If you, or your adult age student, believe something in any record file is inaccurate or misleading, you have the right to request that a correction be made and to add comments of your own. At any time when an agreement between the principal or coordinator and parent cannot be reached, you may contact the school superintendent and request a hearing. Federal law also permits parents to file a complaint with the United States Office of Education in Washington, D.C., if you feel the school is violating public school records policies and statutes. You may obtain a manual which more clearly describes the school's record policies from the Cimarron Municipal Schools Administration Office.
